Finding My Voice: Why Abu Dhabi is an Exciting Home for an Abstract Artist

Updated: Feb 21

There is a unique energy in the United Arab Emirates right now, a palpable sense of momentum and possibility. As an abstract artist in Abu Dhabi, I feel this energy every day.. It’s an exciting time to be part of a place that is so intentionally and rapidly building a world-class cultural landscape from the ground up. From the iconic, light-filled dome of the Louvre Abu Dhabi to the palpable buzz surrounding the imminent opening of the Guggenheim, the ambition is breathtaking and infectious.

For an emerging artist, this environment isn't intimidating; it's inspiring. It feels like being a small part of a grand, unfolding story that is just beginning to be written. It’s a place where the future is not just being imagined, but actively constructed, and that spirit of creation is a powerful force for any artist to be around. This is why you are seeing more and more contemporary art of global significance emerge from the UAE.

A Thriving Ecosystem for Art: Beyond the Headlines

The scale of the contemporary art scene in the UAE is undeniable. World-renowned events like Art Dubai and Abu Dhabi Art bring the global art community to our doorstep, creating a vibrant crossroads of international talent and ideas. But beyond the headline-grabbing names and the multi-million dollar museum projects, something quieter and, for an artist, just as important is happening: a local, grassroots arts ecosystem is rapidly expanding and maturing .

Life as an Abstract Artist in Abu Dhabi

This creates a fertile ground for artists to not just survive, but thrive. Here’s what that looks like on a practical level:

• A Growing Gallery Scene: From the established galleries in Alserkal Avenue in Dubai to the emerging independent art spaces across the Emirates, there are more platforms than ever for artists to showcase their work and connect with an audience. This means more opportunities to see art for sale and to connect directly with the creators.

• A Culture of Support: There is a genuine and growing effort to nurture local and resident talent. Initiatives like the Salama bint Hamdan Emerging Artists Fellowship (SEAF) and the Beyond Emerging Artists program at Abu Dhabi Art provide crucial support, mentorship, and visibility for artists at the beginning of their careers.

• An Engaged and Curious Audience: Perhaps most importantly, there is a growing audience of curious and engaged viewers. This includes a new generation of art collectors in Dubai and Abu Dhabi who are looking beyond the established international markets and are actively seeking to connect with and support artists who live and work in the region. They are not just buying art; they are investing in the cultural fabric of their own community. As one local collector noted, "We are not just building collections, we are building a culture."

Finding My Place in the Narrative: Global Vision, Local Inspiration

Within this grand, ambitious landscape, I believe there is a growing appreciation for the personal, the intimate, and the soulful. While the region builds monumental museums for the world, many people are also seeking to create their own personal sanctuaries at home. This is where I hope my work as MMHC finds its voice and its purpose.

My artistic practice, which I call Intuitive Geometry, is not about making grand, sweeping statements that belong in a cavernous museum hall. It is a quieter, more intimate exploration of balance, form, and feeling. It’s about creating abstract wall art that can shift the energy of a room and become a source of calm and connection in a person's private, daily life.

Living in Abu Dhabi directly and profoundly influences this work. It’s a constant source of inspiration that seeps into my canvases in ways both conscious and subconscious:

• The Light: The quality of the light here is unlike anywhere else I have lived. It is sharp, clear, and intense, and it creates the most beautiful, subtle shifts in color and shadow throughout the day. This has pushed me to explore more nuanced color palettes and to incorporate materials like gold and copper leaf that catch and play with the light.

• The Landscape: The natural landscape of the UAE is a masterclass in minimalist beauty. The subtle, shifting tones of the desert sand, the texture of ancient rock formations, the deep blues of the Arabian Gulf—all of these elements have found their way into my work. My use of natural sand as a texture in my textured wall art is a direct homage to this environment.

• The Juxtaposition: Abu Dhabi is a city of beautiful contradictions. It is a place where hyper-modern architecture sits alongside traditional dhow boats, where the ambition for the future is deeply intertwined with a respect for the past. This dynamic tension is exactly what I explore in my own work—the dialogue between the structured, geometric forms and the free, intuitive marks. It is the spirit of Intuitive Geometry embodied in a city.

A Journey of Contribution, Not Conquest

Being an artist here doesn't feel like trying to conquer a market. It feels like being invited to contribute to a conversation. There is a shared sense of purpose and a genuine, collective excitement for the future. The art market in Dubai and Abu Dhabi is not just about financial transactions; it's about building a culture, creating a legacy, and defining what it means to be a center for art and creativity in the 21st century.

I am at the beginning of my journey, and I am deeply aware of how much I have to learn. But I am also deeply grateful to be on this journey here, in this place, at this time. My hope is to contribute a small, authentic piece to the rich, diverse, and ever-growing tapestry of the UAE’s art scene, one original painting at a time. It’s a privilege to create art for the home that is not only inspired by this region, but that will hopefully find its home here as well.
